      When Sam Altman admitted last week that “AI might be in a bit of a bubble,” the comment landed with the thud of inevitability. Equity markets have doubled in five years, propelled almost entirely by ten mega-caps whose valuations hinge on the promise of artificial intelligence. The question is no longer whether the hype is excessive, but how much real-world capital has already been committed—and whether the payoff justifies the bill.

      Market capitalisation is a mirage; it merely multiplies the last traded share price by the number of shares outstanding. What matters to economists—and to anyone with retirement savings parked in global index funds—is the flow of actual resources: silicon, concrete, copper, kilowatt-hours and human talent. Below is a forensic tally of those inputs, followed by the early evidence of what, if anything, the world is receiving in return.

      Silicon and concrete: the hardware bill

      Capital expenditure by just four US megacaps—Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Microsoft—has already reached $344 billion for calendar 2024, according to the latest Bloomberg compilation of company filings. That is more than one per cent of US GDP devoted to data-centre construction and GPU procurement in a single year. The figure excludes private operators such as OpenAI, which raised $48.3 billion across two rounds in 2024 alone, almost entirely earmarked for compute capacity.

      Accounting conventions mask the true burn rate. Server-class GPUs are depreciated over five years, yet chips that were state-of-the-art in 2022 are already uncompetitive for frontier workloads. The effective economic life is closer to 24–36 months, implying a far steeper annual cost than the headline numbers suggest.

      Adding Chinese state enterprises and the global long-tail of corporates brings the cumulative hardware spend to roughly $2 trillion since 2021.

      Kilowatts: the hidden surcharge on every household

      Data centres consumed 1.5 per cent of global electricity in 2024. The International Energy Agency expects that share to double by 2030 under current trajectory. In the United States, wholesale power prices have nearly tripled in regions hosting large AI clusters, feeding directly into retail tariffs. Nationwide, US electricity expenditure has risen by an estimated $400 billion over the past three years—costs ultimately borne by consumers and energy-intensive industries.

      China’s newer grid, built with reserve margins near 100 per cent, absorbs AI demand without price spikes. America’s ageing infrastructure operates with only 15 per cent spare capacity, so every new server farm competes with households and factories for electrons.


      Enterprise adoption: the revenue gap

      An MIT study of 300 large companies that deployed generative AI at scale found 95 per cent generated zero net return despite an incremental $30–40 billion in investment. The tools excel at narrow tasks—image editing, code completion, customer-service triage—but those productivity gains are orders of magnitude smaller than the capital sunk into training ever-larger models.

      Put differently, the technology is useful, but not transformative at current cost structures. Corporates seeking labour substitution are discovering that marginal efficiency gains do not repay the price of a frontier cluster.

      Opportunity cost: what else the money could have built

      The same trillion dollars could have modernised the entire US electrical grid, funded the global energy transition, or doubled R&D budgets for biotech and semiconductors. Instead, it has been channelled into a compute arms race whose half-life is measured in months rather than decades.

      Putting it into practice: what investors should monitor
      • Capex guidance: Watch the next quarterly reports from Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Microsoft for any downward revision to 2025 capex ranges. A deceleration would signal management teams believe marginal returns have turned negative.
      • Power price differentials: Track regional electricity futures in Virginia, Ohio and Texas—three states where hyperscale data-centre build-outs are concentrated. Spikes above $60/MWh would pressure operating margins.
      • Chinese grid resilience: Monitor State Grid Corp capex and reserve-margin data. If Beijing throttles data-centre permits to protect household supply, the global supply of cheap inference capacity could tighten overnight.
      • Enterprise software spend: Survey data from Gartner and IDC suggest CIOs are re-evaluating AI budgets for FY25. A material slowdown would hit Nvidia’s data-centre revenue before it appears in headline earnings.

      The AI revolution may yet deliver epochal benefits, but the invoice is already in the mail. For investors, the immediate task is to distinguish between the price of hope and the cost of reality.
