      Lesson summary:

The ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus emphasised the importance of exercising control over one’s will. Stoicism, an active philosophy school in Greece and Rome, taught the virtues of justice and temperance. Epictetus encouraged people to examine their initial reactions to events and ask themselves whether they are within their control or not. He also urged people to accept the impermanence of things and use challenging situations as a way to exercise virtues and become better human beings. Rather than focusing on outcomes, people should strive to be decent individuals who maintain their integrity and identity. By doing so, they can let go of negative feelings and learn from challenging situations.
